After-RTH Summary — Wednesday, October 07, 2026

Oct 7
2 min read

Stocks gave back Tuesday's record highs as the 10-year yield punched to a 2002 high near 5.3%, with small caps and industrials taking the brunt of the selling.

Index Closes

  • S&P 500 (SPX): 7,801.77, -17.16 (-0.22%)

  • Nasdaq (Composite): 27,538.69, -61.20 (-0.22%)

  • Dow Jones (DJI): 51,179.87, -341.41 (-0.66%)

  • Russell 2000 (RTY): 2,793.36, -36.94 (-1.31%)

Over two-thirds of issues declined, but the cap-weighted tape held up far better than the internals suggest. SPX and the Nasdaq pared deeper midday losses (SPX was down ~0.6% at the lows) and finished off the worst. Tuesday's records remain intact, yet breadth and small-cap weakness say the bid is narrowing. The 30-year at ~5.7% is a 24-year high, and rising long-end yields are squeezing valuation everywhere outside mega-cap tech. Fed minutes at 2pm pointed to another hike before year-end.

Sector Heatmap

Winners (midday readings; closing sector data not yet published)

  • Health Care: +1.7%, the standout

  • Biotech (IBB): +1.1%

  • Consumer Staples: +0.3%

Losers

  • Industrials: -2.3%, the weakest group

  • Materials: -1.5%

Classic rate-shock rotation: defensives and health care bid, cyclicals, financials (~-1.0%), real estate (~-1.0%) and regional banks (KRE -2.1%) sold. Semis lagged (SMH -1.4%) while gold miners (GDX -2.8%) dropped with bullion.

Notable Movers / Themes

  • Caterpillar (CAT): -6% intraday to ~$809, the biggest single drag on the Dow

  • Health care leaders: Eli Lilly (LLY) up ~4%, ResMed (RMD) up ~3.5%, Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) up ~5% midday

  • Infrastructure/industrial washout: QXO and IES Holdings -10%, Sterling Infrastructure -8%, Cognex -8%, Allegion -6%, Comfort Systems -6% (downgrade)

  • HPE: +3% to a record high midday; Skyworks +3.4% as the Qorvo merger advances

  • Precious metals and crypto: gold ~$4,120-4,150 (-1% to -1.5%), silver ~$60, Bitcoin ~$83K (-3% to -4%)

After-Hours Earnings & News

  • No major AMC earnings reactions surfaced in public sources. Light tape after the bell.

  • WTI ~$90 (+0.8%) and Brent ~$101-102 firmed through the session, adding to inflation worries.

Key Levels for Tomorrow's Open

  • SPX: 7,801 pivot (today's close). Reclaim holds the record-high trend; a loss opens 7,770, the intraday low zone.

  • Nasdaq: 27,538 pivot. Above it, tech is still carrying the index; below 27,390 (today's low area) momentum cracks.

  • Dow: 51,180 pivot. Today's low zone near 51,030 is first support; CAT is the swing factor.

  • Russell 2000: 2,793 pivot. Closing under 2,800 is a clear relative-weakness flag; bulls need a recapture of 2,830.

Macro Context Going Into Thursday

The 10-year (~5.3%) and 30-year (~5.7%) are at multi-decade highs and remain the market's governing variable. The minutes leaned hawkish, with another hike seen before year-end; futures price roughly a 20% chance of 25bp on Oct. 28 (down from about 50% a week ago) and about 70% for Dec. 9. Next major test is September CPI on Oct. 14 after August's 3.4% y/y. Thursday brings the usual weekly jobless claims and more Treasury supply. Watch auctions: weak demand sends yields higher and equities lower.
