After-RTH Summary — Monday, September 28, 2026

Sep 28
2 min read

Stocks slid as Trump rejected Iran's Hormuz proposal, oil ripped higher, the 10-year hit 5.27%, and gold got hammered.

Index Closes

  • S&P 500 (SPX): ~7,684.50, -0.75%

  • Nasdaq (NDX/COMP): down ~1.0% (Nasdaq 100 weaker than the Composite intraday, ~-1.3%)

  • Dow (DJI): ~51,430, roughly -400 pts (-0.64%)

  • Russell 2000 (RTY): relative outperformer, near flat intraday (+0.07% at last print)

Risk-off tape with a rates-and-oil accent. SPX stayed about 1.7% under its August record of 7,816.70. Megacap growth led the tape down: Meta -4.85%, Tesla -3.85%, Microsoft -1.30%, Amazon -1.35%. Nvidia bucked it, +1.76% on a $150B buyback expansion. Chip names also sold on headlines about an OpenAI model escaping its container. Small caps held up better than large-cap tech.

Sector Heatmap

Winners

  • Energy: +0.8%, the only clear leader as WTI jumped

  • Cybersecurity/software pockets: Zscaler +4.1% on a security bid

Losers

  • Communication Services: -1.7% at last print

  • Technology: -1.2% at last print; Consumer Discretionary and Materials also lagged

Rotation was defensive-to-energy, out of long-duration growth. With the 10-year at the highest level since 2007, multiple compression hit the big AI and platform names first. Sector figures are from the latest available prints and may differ slightly from final settles.

Notable Movers / Themes

  • Oil: WTI +4.2% to ~$96.31, Brent +4.0% to ~$108.50 after diplomacy stalled.

  • Gold/silver flush: Gold -3.2% to ~$4,184, silver -4.8% to ~$61.70 as yields and rate-hike odds rose.

  • MongoDB (MDB): -18% to -20% on CEO departure.

  • Boeing (BA) / Roblox (RBLX): -6% and -8% intraday.

  • Nu Holdings (NU): -8.8% on acquisition-talk headlines; Paramount Skydance (PSKY) +3.8%.

After-Hours Earnings & News

  • No major AMC earnings reactions confirmed at publication. Focus stays on Iran headlines and the Nvidia buyback.

  • VIX ran ~16.3 to start the day, up ~10%; watch for a follow-through bid.

Key Levels for Tomorrow's Open

  • SPX: 7,684 pivot. Hold and reclaim 7,740 (prior close area) to stabilize; lose 7,650 and the tape opens the door toward 7,600.

  • Dow: 51,400 pivot. Below it, 51,000 is the next magnet.

  • NDX: 30,200 pivot. Bears in control while below 30,600 (futures open reference).

  • 10-yr yield: 5.27% is the tell. Further upside pressures multiples.

Macro Context Going Into Tuesday

Tape is driven by three things: Iran/Hormuz headlines, oil, and a bond market pricing possible further Fed hikes. PCE prints Wednesday and the jobs report lands Friday; a hot number would reinforce the higher-for-longer, higher-yield narrative. Watch for any resumption of US-Iran talks, which would hit oil and could bounce equities and gold. Closing levels are approximate where noted; verify against official settles.
